![]() Little Owl’s Bedtime has its own place in the canon, balancing the inevitable fears, the protective role of parents, and the possibility of a little brief rebellion before letting the day end. With language that emphasizes sound words and listening. How is Owl supposed to sleep the day away with the bees buzzing, the woodpecker pecking, the doves cooing, and the squirrels crunching But when night falls. Every children’s book about bedtime inevitably alludes to the tradition of reading as a gateway to sleep. He can see everything, but when he doesnt see Mommy Owl, he starts to listen. Of course, a missing stuffed animal has probably made a brief trip to the bakery before returning to sleep alongside Little Owl. Going to sleep will make the next day come sooner, the tiny night light is “so small even a very shy frog wouldn’t mind you using it,” are statements that defy normal logic but make perfect sense to a young child eager to believe a parent’s explanations. Rather than bathing a child in the aura of almost otherworldly security provided by a book like Goodnight Moon, Little Owl’s Bedtime places its characters in a familiar setting, but punctuates this domestic quiet with realistic objections and predictable responses. Mom is kind, consistent, but flexible up to a point. Nevertheless, it was a hit.Little Owl is sweet, but obstinate. I certainly think a 5 year old can listen to it, but it is not the usual fare and I found that mini recaps of the action before we began each reading session to be extra-helpful. Owl tries his best to wrap up his night and settle in for a long sleepafter moving past a few bumps in the roadin this Geisel Honor-winning, giggle-worthy bedtime story. Ask what they can identify about the character’s point of view in the poem. Even the font is "fancified." I do, however, recommend it for more experienced listeners. Read the poem aloud to the class and ask students who’s point of view it is written from (first person - the child) and how we can tell (the use of me, my, I). This is really fun to read aloud because of the fantastical vocabulary and the rhyming couplets.
